CALIFORNIA OTHER PLACES AND THINGS

Atamian was born in Detroit, Michigan in 1921 where his interest in photography took root in high school and continued through his college years. Following a brief apprenticeships his promising career was interrupted by three years of service in the U.S. Navy as an Aviator.

After World War II Atamian returned to commercial photography and a career that would span the next 30 years. He gained a reputation as a competent and versatile photographic illustrator whose work appeared in nearly every consumer and trade publication.

During those years as a photographic illustrator he also lectured throughout the United States, Europe and Asia.

In 1977 he left this highly successful business to teach at Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara, Calif. where he was recognized for instilling professional standards in the students development and preparation for the commercial world. He chaired the advertising llustration Department .

After three careers lasting nearly five decades and having reached an age where most in our society retire, Richard turned his attention to the aesthetically ambitious medium of fine art photography. His work shows enthusiasm for the complex interplay of light and the
elements, water, land and sky. In these images he stretches the limits of the medium he has concentrated on for a lifetime. The eye and hand of a master render the spirit of the natural world found in his highly graphic vision.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Light and design are all that matter. After working 30 years for others I now love working for myself. Just doing what I want to do an experiencinga new area of visual imagery. My own interpretation of places and things and how they relate to each other.

"The beauty of man and God is all around us. the eye and mind have a miraculous way of discovering it."
