Artist Statement

JERRY BARON, Oregon painter, works chiefly in oil bar and acrylic on paper or hardboard. His works speak for themselves; full of spontaneous expression and strong color use. Often his paintings provide a satirical or cutting-edge statement about the human condition and/or society.

The colorist has exhibited in major Portland art galleries the last 10 years and has also shown at the Hult Center for the Performing Arts in Eugene, the University of Oregon, Portland University, Sunriver in the Cascades, Coos Art Museum, Virginia Inn in Seattle, White Bird Gallery at Canon Beach, and other galleries in Oregon.

Baron has exhibited in competitions in New York, Montana, Idaho, California and Oregon. A resident of Oregon since 1962, Baron, a former journalist, paints in the historic Citizens Building on Highway 101 in North Bend, near the bay. He has been painting since 1980 and is self taught.

One or more of his works are owned by over 100 buyers, including collectors in Portland, Seattle and Northern California.

Says the painter: "I believe painting is a process of discovery. If one spends too much time deliberating the end result, then the discovery process is thwarted, or lost. As much as possible, I like to let the painting happen on its own; to emerge from itself as I work. A good painter is never in full control of his work. And lastly," adds Baron, "I believe the central ingredients in the discovery process are.....spontaneity and innocence."

Galleries and independent buyers interested in seeing Baron's slides and/or works can contact him at 541/269-1116 or at P.O. Box 504 Coos Bay OR 97420, or at jbaron@mail.coos.or.us His works are for sale on this site.
