BIOGRAPHY / STATEMENT
From Missouri, the son of an evangelical minister and the fourth of twelve children, I was part of a family constantly on the move as my parents searched throughout the midwest and south for enlightenment, redemption and a sort of holy grail. The changing environments fostered a very solitary view of humanity and the world, superimposed with a rigid but constantly evolving moral and religious framework - a duality that stressed the need for absolute perfection and the hopelessness of attempting such a thing.
The look and subject of my work results largely from this environment in that I find myself drawn to juxtapositions of religious and secular, immaculate and destroyed, magic and mundane - elements separated by attitude, position and place in time but parts of the same world.
PRINTS
My work consists of original photographs of locations and debris from varied sites, mainly downtown Los Angeles, which are printed and collaged in my studio before being shot to large halftone film for silkscreens. The prints, ranging in size from 7" x 7" to 40" x 50" and using from 5 to 16 colors are also hand pulled in studio by myself and an assistant on paper, wood, concrete, aluminum, etc. The paints are oil-based and edition sizes range from twelve to thirty, although the most recent prints are only trial proofs.
