BIOGRAPHY

Katherine Kean
Katherine Kean is drawn to nature and natural phenomena as well as many other elements found in the real world and in its culture as symbols. These symbols generate a reaction and are used as a means of suggesting a world which seems to exist out of, or beyond time.

Her work seeks to confront the outer shell of material, both the material of the object portrayed and that of the painting medium employed, to reach a world of spirit through the surface; by way of exploring the surfaces spontaneity and its expressive intensity.

Although many of the elements employed are representational, they are not required to provide an interpretation or to comment upon the world of everyday experience, but are instead placed in a new relationship to the viewer to produce a separate, different, and self sufficient reality. Whether they are realistically portrayed or abstracted, they may contain memories, dreams and visions.
