AUTO-BIOGRAPHY

I was born in Detroit in 1946; I have lived and painted and exhibited in many different countries. I studied at Cass Tech under Donald Brackett, at the Minneapolis Museum School of Art under Robert Reed, at Wayne State University under John Egar, and a little bit at New York University on my own. I taught drawing and painting at the Montreal Museum School of Fine Art, and a few lesser places. Now I live in Tecolotito, New Mexico. Tecolotito means "little owl" in the Aztec language.

My paintings are a synthesis of non-objective process and illusionary space. Though at first glance they seem mostly non-representational, and gestural, in fact they are filled with representational keys, or clues, which invite the viewer's own interpretation.

In this way they are like clouds or patterns on an old wall - except that they are far more precise. Each painting unlocks a very specific area of the imagination. Each painting is unique and particular; one does not neccessarily or obviously relate to another.

This work doesn't focus on the perfection of any particular style or process - rather it is about style and process. It doesn't arise from the imagination so much as it is about imagination; about how and why imagination functions as it does.

Any and all comments are more than welcome. An extensive catalogue going back 25 years, is available on line.
